My name is Annmarie Iya, and I was born and raised in Anchorage. I recently graduated from the University of Alaska Anchorage with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, concentrating in finance, as well as an Occupational Endorsement Certificate in Alaska Native Business Management. I originally began my studies in math to pursue a career in education, but as I explored more finance courses, I became increasingly interested in how I could use my background in math and finance to contribute to meaningful work within Alaskan communities. I plan to remain in Alaska long-term, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to intern with a company with strong ties to the Anchorage community.
During my internship, I had the valuable opportunity to learn firsthand from talented and experienced financial advisors. I was involved in several aspects of the financial planning process, gaining insight into both the technical side of financial planning and how the team develops strong client relationships. From building financial plans to analyzing cash flows and Social Security benefits, I developed an understanding of what goes into planning for a client’s financial success. I had the chance to work with software tools such as MoneyGuide Pro, Orion, and Salesforce, which gave me hands-on experience with the technology that supports financial planning. Creating client presentations and sitting in at meetings also gave me a valuable perspective on how the team collaborates to support each client’s unique goals.
I’m incredibly thankful for the time, guidance, and encouragement I received from this team throughout my internship. I look forward to continuing to grow professionally and to giving back to communities in my home state.
